Get Hooked on Fall at Nantucket Boat Basin

nantucket boat basin fall

The end summer does not mean the end of good times at Nantucket Boat Basin. September and early October can be ideal times to visit, as the days are sunny and serene, seas are following and calm; and space is available!

The Nantucket Boat Basin hosted the Bluefin blast this past weekend. Below is a photo of the crew of Eskimo, with their 490 pound fish.

A total of 42 fish were hooked, most ranging between 50-60 inches overall.  Fall is a great time for tuna fishing off the East coast, as the fish are moving south towards the Carolinas.

The Cystic Fibrosis Slam Tournament has been underway this week.  And Nantucket’s weather has been the best in years for anglers; two “slams” have already been reported.  A “Grand Slam” is when an angler catches four species of fish: a bluefish, striped bass, false albacore and bonito.  All proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Nantucket Classic Fishing Tournament will also be held later this month, as the inaugural Sounding’s Nantucket Classic, sponsored by Soundings Magazine, Cisco Brewery, Southport Boats, Angler’s Journal and the Ocearch vessel.  The tournament is scheduled for Friday, September 23rd and Saturday, September 24th.  The event will include a welcome cocktail reception on the Ocearch research vessel on Friday night, after fishing the afternoon.  Additional information can be found by clicking here.

Exploring Nantucket Made Easier with Priority Bicycles

You may have seen the sleek black bicycles around the island this Spring already, but if not, there are a few things you should know about the new bicycles offered complimentary at the White Elephant Village, The Wauwinet and The Cottages and Lofts at the Boat Basin. Nantucket Insider sat down with Co-Founder of Priority Bicycles, Connor Swegle, to discuss what makes these rides ideal for our guests, everyday riders looking to explore the beauty of Nantucket Island.

Nantucket-4Nantucket Insider: How did you develop the concept for this business?

Connor: For years bicycles have innovated on the upper end- carbon fiber, more speeds, more features. There had been no attention paid to the challenges that  kept everyday recreational riders from getting on their bicycles, people who wanted to get a relaxing ride on the weekend, such as heavy frames, rusting chains, rattling gears, and fixing flats.

We wanted to create a bicycle for those riders- ones who wanted a high quality bicycle, that looked great, and was ready to ride when they were.  We spent our time not adding to the bicycle, but focusing on simplifying to the most essential features that would make a bicycle low-hassle, high-quality, and beautifully designed.

When we launched and shipped our first bicycle- The Priority Classic – we heard “This is the bicycle I’ve been looking for forever!”

image1 (003)

Nantucket Insider: What is the testing process to ensure the bike is truly maintenance and hassle free?

Connor: We stand behind all of our products 100% and ride them everyday ourselves, as well, so testing is very important.  There’s two parts of the testing process.  The first is technical and the second is practical. One primary difference with our bicycles is that they feature a belt-drive- this lowers maintenance and creates a rust-free, grease free, ultra-smooth ride.

We work our bicycles into a cross section of our riders’ lives and locations- commuters in Manhattan, weekend riders in Miami, bike path cruisers in Austin, etc.  We tap first time riders to cycling enthusiasts to ensure that the bicycles are simple to ride and maintain for everyone.

We recently developed a beach cruiser called The Priority Coast. To prove it, for three months we worked hard to make something go wrong or break the Coast. We dumped it carelessly on the sand, rode pedal deep in seawater during low tide, left it out in the rain and hot sun, forgot to rinse it off, banged through mud puddles and over sharp rocks down dirt roads. Not only does the thing still look brand new, it also still rides like the first day we took it out for a spin. Meanwhile the other beach traditional cruiser we tested against, new at the same time, is totally rusted, squeaks horribly, and the chain just fell off again.

Nantucket Insider: Why are these bikes best for riders on Nantucket island?

Connor: One of the things that makes Nantucket Island so beautiful happens to also be extremely hard on bicycles- the coastal environment.  The constant ocean views, cobblestone streets, and beach sand can break down a traditional bicycle quickly.  Our bicycles are light, durable, and with our grease free belt drive you never have to worry about a rusting chain, stained pants or dirty hands, when you are out and about for a day.  Our 3-speed hub and casual riding style makes it easy to get through town or out to Cisco Beach for sunset.  The White Elephant Village, The Wauwinet, and The Cottages and Lofts at the Boat Basin are also all known for their style and quality amenities.   We aim to make our bicycles a great fit on those properties and to extend that experience all throughout the island.

Nantucket Insider: Where are some of the other locations where your bikes thrive?

Connor: What’s exciting for us is that we have riders in all 50 states and many countries around the world, in all age ranges, and lifestyles. Our bikes thrive where our riders thrive because we design our bicycles to be simple throughout our riders’ life, from finding, purchasing, assembling, and ongoing maintenance with their bicycle.  Hassle free is something that doesn’t start and stop with when you are on your bicycle.

Nantucket Insider: What are your favorite sites to see when cruising Nantucket by bike?

Connor: Staying at a Nantucket Island Resorts hotel is one of our greatest treats.  It feels like home every time we arrive.  Last time we were in Nantucket we took bicycles over on the ferry, and once we started riding, we didn’t stop.  Our favorites have been a ride out to Brant Point for some photos, out to Cisco Brewery to hear some music and have a few drinks, parking our bicycles outside of The Nautilus for some appetizers and drinks before dinner at Lola 41, and also great food and wine at Pi Pizzeria.

We also can’t forget going to Stubby’s to grab a breakfast sandwich before getting on the Ferry to head back.

Priority Bicycles are featured at the The Wauwinet, The Cottages at Lofts at the Boat Basin, and the White Elephant Village. The company was founded by cycling industry veteran Dave Weiner and co-founder Connor Swegle to deliver hassle-free, high quality bicycles to recreational riders.  Priority Bicycles has been featured for its product design and business model in the Wall Street Journal, Popular Science, Outside Magazine, and others, as well as received the “Best In Class Design” distinction by Inc. Magazine. You can learn more about them at prioritybicycles.com .

Top Dog of 2015

After many Facebook votes- 275 to be exact- and some tough competition, The Cottages & Lofts are ready to announce the official winner of 2015’s Top Dog Contest, and the winner is Bandit! Nantucket is Bandit’s favorite vacation spot and he loves swimming all day when he visits!

We’re sure he also enjoys all of the awesome pet amenities The Cottages have to offer; like toys, treats, riding the beach bus and The Cottages’ official “doggie turndown” service.

Bandit is an 11 year old Yellow Lab but he still acts like a puppy!  He has a new one week old (human) sister and he loves to keep watch over. Bandit can’t wait to bring her to The Cottages in the spring.

Table No. 1 at Old South Wharf

Along the shell lined walkway of Nantucket’s Old South Wharf you will find a unique collection of tiny, charming, cedar shingled stores and galleries. One of the new shops on the wharf this season is a beautifully appointed wine and cheese shop, Table No. 1. Nantucket Insider had heard through the grapevine that this place is a new favorite of guests at The Cottages & Lofts and Nantucket Boat Basin for their amazing made to order cheese platters.

Owner Sarah Powers has created an inviting atmosphere where people can gather and enjoy tastings of her shop’s curated selections of wine and cheeses. In many ways this was just what Sarah had mind when she thought of opening a shop on Nantucket, as the island always struck her as a place where food and wine brought people together. Table No. 1 has organized some fun events outside of the traditional wine tastings to expand this social experience with book signings featuring well known authors, such as Jane Green and cook book author Sarah Lee Chase, and they host a weekly “Bottles & Backgammon” gathering from 6-8pm.

Table No. 1 offers an incredible selection of  home entertaining items, many of which are handcrafted, such as glassware, serving trays and knives. Hosting guests can be done in a snap here;  the store’s beautiful cheese platters are available to go when you stop in to pick up a bottle of wine and perhaps a floral arrangement by Flowers on Chestnut, also sold in the store.

Hinckley Yachts Rendezvous at Nantucket Boat Basin

2015 marked the 8th year that owners of the spectacular Hinckley Yachts have gathered together at Nantucket Boat Basin for a Hinckley Rendezvous.

The event began with Hinckley owner Frank Stasiowski’s dream of fellow Hinckley owners enjoying a few days together with their boats on Nantucket – which is his “favorite place in the world”. It should be noted that Stasiowski is no ordinary fan of Nantucket Boat Basin; he actually worked with the design team on the marina from 1970-73! He began organizing the rendezvous on a small scale, with just four boats and more and more joined each year following. After three years of these rendezvous on Nantucket, the Hinckley company caught on to what a fantastic experience this was and officially stepped in to coordinate various aspects of the gathering.

It is a truly idyllic weekend for the Hinckley owners, with a Thursday through Sunday itinerary filled with classic Nantucket activities and experiences; cocktails and chats with certain famous Nantucket authors, social gatherings at notable Nantucket art galleries, luxury car test drives, a cocktail contest and  a gala dinner at White Elephant’s Brant Point Grill. Of course, there are also many opportunities throughout the weekend for Hinckley owners to gain more knowledge of their yachts, learning tips and fast fixes from Hinckley representatives, and as featured in the video above (courtesy of Take Flight Cinema) the yachts partake in a gorgeous Hinckley Harbor Parade to Wauwinet

At the end of the Hinckley Rendezvous, these guests who travel from all over the Northeast to join in the camaraderie of Hinckley ownership leave Nantucket happy and delighted with so many memories and new friends.
