Making Tracks on ACK…

nantucket aerial viewNantucket Insider knows that some ways of getting around this bustling island are easier than others. We’re sharing with you the inside track on how we prefer to traverse the island from the home base of some of our favorite hotels during these busy summer months…

The Wauwinet Lady
The best way to head to TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet for lunch or dinner is aboard The Wauwinet Lady. Reservations are required for this once daily lunch and once daily dinner cruise, departing from White Elephant and sailing across Nantucket Bay to TOPPER’S, for more information on The Wauwinet Lady, click here.

Top Dog of 2015

After many Facebook votes- 275 to be exact- and some tough competition, The Cottages & Lofts are ready to announce the official winner of 2015’s Top Dog Contest, and the winner is Bandit! Nantucket is Bandit’s favorite vacation spot and he loves swimming all day when he visits!

We’re sure he also enjoys all of the awesome pet amenities The Cottages have to offer; like toys, treats, riding the beach bus and The Cottages’ official “doggie turndown” service.

Bandit is an 11 year old Yellow Lab but he still acts like a puppy!  He has a new one week old (human) sister and he loves to keep watch over. Bandit can’t wait to bring her to The Cottages in the spring.

Halloween Happenings on Nantucket

Nantucket Insiders have picked their pumpkins at Bartlett’s Farm (so many varieties to choose from!) and we are feeling the Halloween spirit here on the island. It’s a great time to experience Nantucket’s quintessential, New England small town charm.

In October, Nantucket Insiders look forward to gathering with the crowd of families on Main Street on Halloween for trick-or-treating as the kids in costume stop by all of the shops and businesses in town for candy and fun.

halloween parade

The in-town festivities begin with a costume pageant at The Methodist Church on Centre Street, where each child receives a ribbon and a goody bag. This is followed by the Halloween parade which travels the length of Main Street so all bystanders can admire the creative costumes of their friends and neighbors!

Apugs bandannas1

Four legged guests at The Cottages & Lofts, like these two pugs, have Halloween treats to look forwards to as well. A special spooky bandanna will be given to each dog checking in during Halloween weekend, and guests will also receive a framed photo of the pooch wearing their Halloween costume -or their new accessory!

Now that we’ve covered the festive fun for the kids and the pups- Nantucket Insider also has the scoop on a new Halloween happening for the grown ups. TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet will be hosting a “Trick-or-Treat Dinner” on Saturday October 31st for their final night of the 2015 season. If you haven’t dined at TOPPER’S yet this fall, Nantucket Insider recommends trying the Pan Roasted Halibut served with little neck clams, celery root, charred leeks, applewood smoked bacon and potato veloute.

For dessert, the Spiced Maple Torte with walnut baklava, pan roasted figs and ginger ice cream makes the perfect Halloween treat.

Each table will enjoy a 30%, 40%, or 50% discount (applied to food only) simply by picking a surprise discount out of a magic cauldron. One lucky winner will receive a free dinner for two with a bottle of wine, selected by TOPPER’S sommelier. Costumes are optional and a prize will be awarded for best costume.

The Cottages & Lofts “Top Dog” 2014

CiCiwLogoThe WOOF Cottages announce the winner of their annual “Top Dog” contest. This year’s winner is an adorable “Chiweenie” (half Chihuahua and half Dachsund) named CiCi.

Garnering the most votes on The Cottages’ Facebook “Top Dog” poll, Cici and her family receive a 2-night stay in 2015 at their favorite Nantucket spot- The WOOF Cottages

Cici’s proud owners shared with Nantucket Insider the story of how this precious pup came into their family and how they all love spending time on Nantucket together, documented with some pretty cute photos too!

CiCi is a rescue pup. She was born in Alabama then rescued from “Sweet Paws Rescue” in Essex MA.  Her family saw her on The Sweet Paws Facebook site. After reading her bio they knew they wanted her. She was one of two newborn puppies who’s mother was hit by an oil truck. CiCi wasn’t expected to live because of her tiny size.  CiCi was only 14 ounces and bottle fed by a special woman in Alabama. She made her way to Massachusetts in  March and was adopted right away!

Spunky, energetic and so very entertaining, she expects to be included in all family plans from an errand in the car, a trip to the mall (hidden in a purse), a little cruise on a boogie board or a trip on the big boat to Nantucket. She’s up for just about anything. This past summer was her first trip to Nantucket and surely not her last! CiCi2

Congratulations CiCi- your friends at The WOOF Cottages can’t wait to welcome you back in 2015!

The Dogs at Nantucket Boat Basin on National Dog Day

Today is National Dog Day, and Nantucket Insider checked in with a few important pups at The Cottages & Lofts and Nantucket Boat Basin to see how they will spend the day.

Sherwood Round NameSherwood, the long-time mascot of The Cottages & Lofts, is an 11 year old yellow lab. Sherwood loves to greet his four legged guests checking in at The Cottages all summer long, but it’s not all work and no play – despite the hustle and bustle at The Cottages, he still finds time for a hike through the State Forest or a sandy jaunt at Dionis Beach. Today Sherwood’s enjoying a nice quiet nap after working hard on planning next season’s agenda, though this season is far from over!

Ellie Round Name

Ellie is a three year old golden retriever who has been known to cover for Sherwood at The Cottages, as the mascot in training. She’s spending her day today with mostly business as usual; playing around the docks, keeping the staff at The Cottages entertained, and getting some extra biscuits from the check-in desk!

KPAltar Rock with Name

Nantucket Boat Basin would not be complete without Killington, the eleven year old Brittany, known for cruising the docks in the Boat Basin golf cart. Lucky dog Killington is off duty today, relaxing at home and possibly out for a walk at Altar Rock. It’s easy to see why the dog days of summer are best enjoyed on Nantucket!

WOOF Welcome Bags at the Boat Basin

SMDSCN3188The breeze blowing through one’s hair, lapping cool cocktails at sunset, none of this pairs better than with your four-legged furry friend.
While cruising this summer with your canine or kitty, stop by our Nantucket Boat Basin office to pick up a complimentary WOOF welcome bag, complete with treats, a Boat Basin logo’d tennis ball and travel water bowl.  No crew member should be left behind, least of all your seaworthy friends & family with salty paws.

Calling all Pets

stella & mattie

There are more comfortable ways for your pets to travel to Nantucket!

By water: Dogs and cats sail from Hyannis at no extra cost aboard both HyLine Cruises and Steamship Authority. Leashes, but not kennels, are required for dogs. By air: Flying with your pet to Nantucket is a breeze with Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines. An additional fee of only $10 per animal each way, as well as an advance reservation, is required. Cats must be in a kennel but dogs flying to ACK from Hyannis or New Bedford can sit right in the cabin with you! Once you’ve arrived, getting around the island proves to be just as easy. Well-behaved and leashed dogs are also allowed on the public transit system, the WAVE. And if you’re looking for pet-friendly accommodations on Nantucket, look no further than The Cottages & Lofts at The Boat Basin.
