Christmas Stroll Recap from Jared Coffin House

nantucket christmas carolers

Nantucket has been recovering this week from a very busy and very successful annual Christmas Stroll weekend. With Jared Coffin House‘s prime location at the top of Centre and Broad Streets, the energy was fun and festive all weekend long!

With its nostalgic, old New England charm, the hotel has been a long time fan favorite for Nantucket Christmas Stroll– all 43 rooms nearly sold out by the end of October for this highly anticipated holiday celebration.

For the past several years, an added element of holiday spirit is the official stroll visit of Santa Claus. Santa himself arrived at Jared Coffin House this year aboard a vintage style fire truck following his Coast Guard vessel’s docking at Straight Wharf and a cheerful journey up the cobblestones of Main Street.

Jared Coffin House General Manager Michael Sharlet reported that an estimated 200+ children waited in line at the hotel to meet Santa and have a photo taken by Nantucket photographer Ron Lynch. An added bonus for the kids this year was sent by Nantucket’s favorite storybook character, Barnaby Bear. Barnaby provided adorable canvas gift bags with crayons and a Barnaby Bear coloring book (all images hand drawn by author and illustrator,Wendy Rouillard).

To relieve any fatigue of waiting in line to see Santa Claus, a few holiday elves were on hand, passing out hot cocoa!

Fall Back in Time on Nantucket

nantucket pumpkins
With bountiful pumpkin displays and fall temperatures just starting to take a dip later in October, it’s a great time to experience Nantucket’s quieter side, especially if you’re a history buff.

Just steps from Jared Coffin House, Nantucket Historical Association’s Whaling Museum is always a must see sight on any Nantucket visit, but the organization has several other fun and fascinating events to check out in the later part of fall.

moby dick nantucket

If you’re a fan of Moby-Dick, (and really, is there a Nantucket Insider who isn’t?!), be sure to mark at least two upcoming NHA events on your calendar. As part the NHA’s popular ‘Food for Thought’ lecture series, writer Christine Harding shares her limericks inspired by the great American novel, accompanied by Susan Boardman‘s exquisite embroidered narratives, which are based on the story. This event takes place on October 20 from 12-1pm at the Whaling Museum and is free to the public.

From October 21-23, the NHA will host a Moby-Dick Reading Marathon, which will take place over the span of three days, with a break each evening. Approximately ninety participants will take turns reading aloud all 135 chapters plus the epilogue from Herman Melville’s classic American novel, Moby-Dick; Or, The Whale.

nantucket library

The reading will begin at the Atheneum at 1 India Street on Friday, October 21, 2016 at Noon and move to the Whaling Museum at 13 Broad Street at 6 P.M. on that same evening, concluding at 10 P.M. It will reconvene at the Atheneum on Saturday, October 22, 2016 at 10 A.M. and last until 9 P.M. that day. The final day of the reading will take place on Sunday, October 23, 2016 from 10 A.M. to approximately 2 P.M.

nantucket ghost story

Nantucket Insiders know Halloween on Nantucket is a special highlight of the fall season. To celebrate Halloween, NHA in partnership with Theatre Workshop of Nantucket (TWN) presents a night of themed storytelling by costumed actors with the evocative Old Gaol property as the backdrop. This event will be held on Wednesday, October 26 at 6pm at 15R Vestal Street.

The Old Gaol (old English, pronounced “jail”), an iconic historic landmark, is one of the oldest extant jails in America, and the oldest remaining intact jailhouse on Nantucket. Beginning in 1676, several Nantucket locations were used to hold miscreants, but in 1768, in response to Nantucket’s emerging status as an international seaport, which brought with it an increase in the number of transients, a dedicated structure went up on High Street.

“In the crisp fall air, these ghostly tales take hold of the Old Goal as the NHA and TWN collaborate a night of Halloween magic, says Justin Cerne, TWN Artistic Director. “This is another fantastic moment when two wonderful organizations come together to bring a fun night of spookiness to the Nantucket community!”

Admission to this program is $5 per person.

Nantucket Insider with Local Author Nancy Thayer

xmas bigger_1444x900

Christmas Stroll is an absolute can’t miss island event and with the 42nd Stroll upon us this upcoming weekend, Nantucket Insider met up with island local of 31 years and New York Times bestselling author, Nancy Thayer,  to discuss her latest book and favorite holiday traditions over coffee. Nancy’s latest holiday novel, A Very Nantucket Christmas, was released on October 27, 2015. The festive collection features two tales set on Nantucket island, A Nantucket Christmas and An Island Christmas.

Nancy3larger

Nantucket Insider:  How did you come to find your focus – writing specifically about the people, places and events on Nantucket island.

Nancy: I was living in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and had published my first three novels with Doubleday when, in 1982, I came to the island to visit a friend and fell in love—with the island and with Charley Walters, who interviewed me for Arts View, his show on a local television station.  It was an excellent interview—we were married two years later and I’ve lived on the island with him for 31 years.

Since then, most of my books have been completely or partially set on the island.  Nantucket is an infinite treasure trove of ideas and images—the lighthouses, the golden beaches, the charming town, the distance from the “real” world.  It allows us to be set free for a while of daily concerns and look into the distance, take a deep breath, and dream.

Nantucket Insider: Nantucket was recently voted as the 4th best place to celebrate the holiday season in the United States on the top 20 list by Washington Post and one of the Top 12 “Out of the Ordinary Christmas Get-Aways” by Forbes Travel Guide. What do you think it is that makes the holiday season so special on Nantucket?

Nancy: Nantucket provides a Charles Dickens world; cozy and charming and cut off from the mainland, a kind of magical bubble with fabulous shops, elegant bars, and world-renowned chefs and restaurants.  It’s become a second home for many celebrities, athletes, CEOs and actors, so you never know who you’ll be seated next to at dinner!

Easy Street Basin Dinghy Tree (GH)-(ZF-5202-09900-1-001)

Nantucket Insider: What is your favorite Nantucket holiday tradition?

Nancy: I love the Christmas Stroll, held the weekend after Thanksgiving.  I’ve written about it in both my Christmas novels, and in other novels too.  Small Christmas trees sparkling with lights line the streets.  Shop windows and hotels are fabulously decorated. I shop with friends, stopping for a hot bowl of clam chowder and a cold glass of champagne. It’s like an enormous party! At night, in the harbor, sailboats illuminate their masts with Christmas lights.  Looking out over the dark water as the ferries glide in like floating castles is pure enchantment.

22

Nantucket Insider:  What is your favorite family Christmas tradition?

Nancy: Shamelessly, I admit: Opening presents on Christmas morning. We all love giving presents, and with our family, it takes all morning.  We start with coffee as we open presents, and after an hour or so, we pause for scrambled eggs and champagne.  Then, more present-opening. Of course everyone gets books and games from Mitchell’s Book Corner and Book Works.  After we all go for a long walk, we settle in to read while the turkey roasts.

2xmas mitchells

Nantucket Insider:
What can we expect from you in 2016?

Nancy: My new novel, The Island House, comes out in May, 2016.  It’s about a fortunate but eccentric family with a huge house on the bluff and lots of romance and even more secrets.
