TOPPER’S Travels…

Fruili Region Italy Wineries

One of the things that Nantucket Insiders do best in the off season is travel.
Higor Valle, one of TOPPER’S certified sommeliers, shares with us notes from the road to his latest wine visit to Cantina Jermann, located along the border of Italy and Slovenia.

Cantina Jermann

This winery is often regarded as one of the most important of it locale, largely due to the innovative and passionate approach of its proprietor, Silvio Jermann. His family has been involved in wine-making in the region since 1881, when his great grandfather came over from Slovenia. Cantina Jermann currently holds several Tre Bicchieri Awards (this award is highly coveted, as it singles out a wine as being one of Italy’s best, and a validation of the winemaker’s craftsmanship). Their latest wine to receive this honor was the 2015 Pinot Grigio.

Jermann Vineyard

Higor was hosted by the winery’s Export Manager and her assistant, and greeted with a glass of wine and some small bites of local cheese, prosciutto and polenta- which were wonderful accompaniments to the wines sampled.

Friuli local cheeses

The three top picks for Higor were Vintage Trunia 2014; dry velvety and well balanced, Capo Martino 2012; intense notes of apricot, dried flowers, and honey blossom- great acidity hold it all together in this wine. Capo Martino 2012 also holds some sentimental value to the family as it was produced from the 1991 harvest commemorating the family’s great father Anton who made the journey to the region 110 years earlier. The grapes used are of historic varieties and even the label depicts elements dear to the hearts of agriculturalists; sun, water, grapes, and fish as a symbol of religion.

Cantino Jermann 2014

Higor also enjoyed the Afix Riesling with its brilliant straw color, vibrant acidity and notes of green apple with a touch of residual sugar.

Higor Valle, Toppers Nantucket

A little bit about Higor; though he’s lived in the U.S. for the past ten years, he is orignally from Sao Paulo, Brazil and this will be his second season as a sommelier at TOPPER’S. Since his first summer on Nantucket, nearly five years ago, he’s always had an interest in working at TOPPER’S because of its vast and impressive wine program. In 2017, Higor looks forward to enjoying the beautiful island and of course, opening amazing bottles of wine for the guests!

The dining room at TOPPER’S was completely sold out to a combination of house guests staying at the hotel, and guests who came out for dinner only. As the hotel and the restaurant are closed as of October 30 until April 20, 2017; this was the last chance until spring to enjoy the cozy, yet elegant ambiance of TOPPER’S Dining Room and the exceptional cuisine prepared by Chef Kyle Zachary , with favorites like Lobster Pasta and Tarte Flambe on the menu.

Dinner guests were treated to discounts of 30, 40, or even 50%, determined by picking a ticket from TOPPER’S Magic Cauldron. From TOPPER’S renown wine cellar, all Peter Michael wine was enjoyed at discounts of 25%.

With end of The Wauwinet’s season typically falling on or around Halloween, and the popularity of the Trick or Treat Dinner, this is a tradition that is sure to continue.

Get Hooked on Fall at Nantucket Boat Basin

nantucket boat basin fall

The end summer does not mean the end of good times at Nantucket Boat Basin. September and early October can be ideal times to visit, as the days are sunny and serene, seas are following and calm; and space is available!

The Nantucket Boat Basin hosted the Bluefin blast this past weekend. Below is a photo of the crew of Eskimo, with their 490 pound fish.

A total of 42 fish were hooked, most ranging between 50-60 inches overall.  Fall is a great time for tuna fishing off the East coast, as the fish are moving south towards the Carolinas.

The Cystic Fibrosis Slam Tournament has been underway this week.  And Nantucket’s weather has been the best in years for anglers; two “slams” have already been reported.  A “Grand Slam” is when an angler catches four species of fish: a bluefish, striped bass, false albacore and bonito.  All proceeds from the tournament are donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Nantucket Classic Fishing Tournament will also be held later this month, as the inaugural Sounding’s Nantucket Classic, sponsored by Soundings Magazine, Cisco Brewery, Southport Boats, Angler’s Journal and the Ocearch vessel.  The tournament is scheduled for Friday, September 23rd and Saturday, September 24th.  The event will include a welcome cocktail reception on the Ocearch research vessel on Friday night, after fishing the afternoon.  Additional information can be found by clicking here.

Summer at TOPPER’S

The Wauwinet is home to one of the nation’s most acclaimed restaurants, TOPPER’S, a favorite foodie destination set alongside the waters of Nantucket Bay. This Nantucket Insider favorite taps into the island’s rich supply of fresh regional ingredients, from land and sea. TOPPER’S dining room offers a uniquely Nantucket feeling of elegant fine dining.

If you seek more casual fare, you will love TOPPER’s deck, where you can dine under a heated awning with views of the bay.

Nantucket Insider has sampled the summer menu this season at TOPPER’S, and it does not disappoint! See below for a few of our favorite picks from both the dining room and the deck menus.

Summer Harvest Salad

Various seasonal vegetables (may include and are not limited to heirloom tomatoes, squash, eggplant, beans, peppers, fennel, beets and carrots) are served raw, pickled, roasted or pureed along with seasonal berries, stone fruits, herbs and herb blossoms.  TOPPER’S adds a crispy quinoa tuile (best described as a “cracker”) for texture. The dish is rounded out with Stracciatella cheese, a fresh cow’s milk cheese, made of small shreds of curd mixed with cream.  This is the filling that you find inside of Burrata.

Seaweed Butter Poached Lobster

The 1 ¼ pound lobster is first partially poached and the meat is removed from the shell and then poached in nori flavored emulsified butter.  The lobster is served with an heirloom tomato tart (puff pastry topped with tomatoes cooked down to jam consistency and finished with sherry vinegar, topped with African blue basil, chive tips and thyme blossoms), glazed baby squash, pickled baby squash, marinated shaved baby zucchini, a fried squash blossom and a rich lobster bisque flavored with tomato and finished with Pedro Ximénez sherry. The dish is garnished with a dehydrated Kalamata olive crumble.

Three Cocktails to Beat the Heat

2014-01-07 11.02.09

Hot sunny days inevitably make us thirsty and what better way to beat the heat than heading to White Elephant’s Brant Point Grill, overlooking the cool blue water of the harbor?

nantucket cocktails

New BPG bar tender, Jesse, served Nantucket Insider three of the best beverages to sip in the shade.

One of the most popular cocktails on the menu is the Watermelon Mojito. This drink is as enjoyable to sip as it is to look at. Made with Cruzen rum, fresh lime juice, agave nectar, a house made watermelon juice and a hint house grown mint- Jesse literally plucked the mint from a crop growing just beyond the edge of the bar! This mojito is unique in its’ preparation; the mint leaves are shaken with the liquids and strained over ice, so there are no clumps of mint leaf in the cocktail and it also makes the drink a bit quicker to produce!

If you’re seeking a cocktail that’s cool as a cucumber, the BPG’s Coolcumber will surely do the trick. This perfect summer sipper is made with house-made basil-infused cucumber syrup, Hendrick’s gin, lemon juice and is then shaken and strained over ice. It is of course garnished with a fresh slice of cucumber.

Nantucket Insider always likes a good go-to mocktail in the summertime and the BPG’s signature version is ideal for hot weather, with just the right amount of fruit flavor and a hint of cinnamon for a little kick. The house made syrup for this beverage includes ginger, pineapple, orange peel and cinnamon, and is mixed with fresh lime juice and two ounces of ginger ale. To make this mocktail a cocktail simply add Domaine de Canton ginger liquor.

Cocktails & Cruises at White Elephant

White Elephant Hotel‘s harbor side lawn was awash in pinks and greens yesterday, as friends from In the Pink came out to celebrate the launch of several newly outfitted Hinckley Yachts from Barton & Gray Mariners Club. The three seriously stylish ships feature signature upholstery and decor designed by Lilly Pulitzer, Nantucket based design maven Audrey Sterk, and of course Nantucket Insider’s favorite- White Elephant.

Barton & Gray Mariners Club hosted party-goers aboard the yachts for half hour cruises to sample the luxurious Barton & Gray experience, which many White Elephant guests are no stranger to, as they have access to book exclusive excursions on the boats throughout the season.  We hope to see these beautiful boats out on the harbor often this summer!

Halloween Happenings on Nantucket

2bfpumpkins
Nantucket Insiders have picked their pumpkins at Bartlett’s Farm (so many varieties to choose from!) and we are feeling the Halloween spirit here on the island. It’s a great time to experience Nantucket’s quintessential, New England small town charm.

In October, Nantucket Insiders look forward to gathering with the crowd of families on Main Street on Halloween for trick-or-treating as the kids in costume stop by all of the shops and businesses in town for candy and fun.

halloween parade

The in-town festivities begin with a costume pageant at The Methodist Church on Centre Street, where each child receives a ribbon and a goody bag. This is followed by the Halloween parade which travels the length of Main Street so all bystanders can admire the creative costumes of their friends and neighbors!

Apugs bandannas1

Four legged guests at The Cottages & Lofts, like these two pugs, have Halloween treats to look forwards to as well. A special spooky bandanna will be given to each dog checking in during Halloween weekend, and guests will also receive a framed photo of the pooch wearing their Halloween costume -or their new accessory!

wau pumpkins

Now that we’ve covered the festive fun for the kids and the pups- Nantucket Insider also has the scoop on a new Halloween happening for the grown ups. TOPPER’S at The Wauwinet will be hosting a “Trick-or-Treat Dinner” on Saturday October 31st for their final night of the 2015 season. If you haven’t dined at TOPPER’S yet this fall, Nantucket Insider recommends trying the Pan Roasted Halibut served with little neck clams, celery root, charred leeks, applewood smoked bacon and potato veloute.

2Hallibut TOPPERS

For dessert, the Spiced Maple Torte with walnut baklava, pan roasted figs and ginger ice cream makes the perfect Halloween treat.

SpicedMaple Torte TOPPERS

Each table will enjoy a 30%, 40%, or 50% discount (applied to food only) simply by picking a surprise discount out of a magic cauldron. One lucky winner will receive a free dinner for two with a bottle of wine, selected by TOPPER’S sommelier. Costumes are optional and a prize will be awarded for best costume.
